The images in the series are human/animal
pairings, reflecting a covenant between the animal world and the human world.
The relationship is one of reverence and of respect. They make
reference to characters in classical mythology and the stories of
Christian martyrs. Traditionally, a painting depicting a martyr often
provides the viewer with an identifying clue, usually by means of a symbolic
object. In my paintings, the animal functions in a similar way; representing
a clue or revealing a certain attribute of the subject. In each painting,
three fundamental elements come into play; the figures personality, the
animal's quality, and the atmospheric condition. This visual trinity forms
each narrative. |
